An environment done as part of a world building project. The creation of this environment took place over a 2 week period with a focus on narrative elements and level design.

Rendered in Unreal Engine 4.

Tools: Photoshop, UE4

This environment was challenging since the space was only created with pre-existing assets. After browsing through Epic's free Infinity Blade packs, I found that the Grasslands Pack reminded me of old forts due to the exterior castle assets and cobblestone details. I researched all sorts of famous forts, but I was drawn to the old forts scattered around the Caribbean. I found the contrast of a foreboding structure set among a tropical setting was appealing and would provide many opportunities for narrative spaces. Such spaces included ammunition storage within the fort and areas for soldier encampment.

Altogether, this fort was inspired by forts seen in games such as Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Assassin's Creed Black Flag in addition to films like Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

A collection of concept art, in-game screens, and research images from my process book.

The creation of this environment started out as a block out with BSP brushes in-engine. After completing the block out, it was tested for scale and maneuverability. Ultimately, I wanted a space that told a story as players explored the map. After effectively creating my space, structural assets were placed to build the fort. Larger props were added and the environment was polished off with finishing touches such as particle effects and other small details.
